Colombia armed groups increase child recruitment via social media
Human Rights Watch has released a report titled ‘Pensé que nunca volvería a ver a mi mamá’, documenting a significant rise in the forced recruitment of children and adolescents by armed groups in Colombia. Since 2021, at least 1,500 minors have been recruited, with a notable increase in cases starting in 2023. The Cauca department is identified as a primary hotspot, accounting for over half of the reported cases.
FARC dissidents are identified as the main perpetrators, responsible for approximately 74% of the recruitment. Other groups involved include the ELN and the Clan del Golfo. The report highlights that indigenous children are disproportionately affected, representing nearly half of the documented victims despite making up only 4% of the population. Furthermore, more than 30% of those recruited are between the ages of 10 and 14, a practice that may constitute a war crime.
Criminal organizations are increasingly utilizing social media platforms, specifically TikTok and Facebook, to recruit minors. These groups use algorithms, emojis, and hashtags to bypass moderation, promoting content that glorifies armed life or offering deceptive job opportunities. Some children are even being trained in drone warfare to pilot explosives-laden drones. Human Rights Watch has criticized the state's failure to implement effective prevention and protection policies and has called on social media companies to improve their moderation strategies.
