Colombia armed groups increase child recruitment via social media
Human Rights Watch has released a report documenting a sharp rise in the recruitment of minors by armed groups in Colombia. Since 2021, at least 1,500 children and adolescents have been recruited, with FARC dissidents identified as responsible for 74% of these cases.
Criminal organizations, including the ELN and the Clan del Golfo, are increasingly utilizing social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok to target vulnerable youth. The report highlights that algorithms on these platforms often promote content that glorifies armed life or provides false job opportunities. Researchers noted that once users engage with such content, platform algorithms frequently recommend additional accounts linked to criminal groups.
Recruited minors are being used for various roles, including combat, intelligence gathering, and piloting explosives-laden drones. The impact is particularly severe among indigenous communities, who comprise nearly half of the victims, and girls, who represent 40% of cases and face high risks of sexual violence. Human Rights Watch warned that the failure of digital moderation and government protection systems allows these groups to operate with impunity.
