Colombia child recruitment crisis fueled by social media

A report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) highlights a growing crisis in Colombia, where armed groups are increasingly using social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook to recruit children and adolescents. Data reviewed by HRW from the Ombudsman's Office indicates approximately 1,500 minors have been victims of recruitment since 2021.

According to the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), 44% of minors recruited during 2025 were captured through social media. The investigation identified numerous accounts used to glamorize life within illegal groups by showcasing weapons and money. Some accounts even facilitated private contact and offered transportation to interested youths. While Meta and ByteDance removed reported profiles, new accounts frequently reappear.

HRW criticized the role of platform algorithms, which may recommend extremist content to users showing interest. Additionally, the report points to institutional failures in Colombia; while 3,947 investigations into recruitment were opened between 2016 and 2025, only 45 have progressed to a formal stage.
