Colombia Congress approves law to prosecute armed groups
The Colombian Congress has approved a new law designed to prioritize the prosecution of armed groups, marking a significant shift in national security policy. This initiative, led by the administration of Abelardo de la Espriella, replaces the “paz total” (total peace) policy implemented by his predecessor, Gustavo Petro.
The Senate passed the bill with 57 votes in favor and 24 against, while the House of Representatives approved it with 95 votes in favor and 10 against. The law now awaits the president's signature for official promulgation.
Following the legislative approval, an explosive attack occurred near a police station in the municipality of Patía, Cauca, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old civilian and injuring two women. Additionally, an explosive device targeted a toll booth in Valle del Cauca, though no casualties were reported in that incident. De la Espriella stated that the previous policy provided incorrect incentives to armed organizations, allowing for territorial expansion without successful demobilization.
