Colombia denies entry to Mexican rescue brigade following earthquake

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that a search and rescue brigade from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) was not permitted to enter Colombia following a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The deployment was halted because Colombian authorities requested a specific certification that differs from the credentials currently held by the Mexican brigade.

While the rescue personnel remain ready to deploy if authorization is granted, Mexico has instead sent humanitarian aid via Hercules aircraft, including food supplies, water, and medical supplies. Sheinbaum emphasized the extensive international experience of the Mexican brigade, noting they have participated in rescue operations in 98 countries.

Colombian authorities have maintained that only international search and rescue teams meeting recognized certification standards will be permitted to participate in relief efforts, asserting that these requirements are not based on political criteria.
