Colombia earthquake survivor loses family in building collapse

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Cali, Colombia, resulted in the collapse of a four-story apartment building, claiming the lives of five members of the Saavedra Caycedo family.

Ana María Saavedra Caycedo, one of a set of triplets, was the sole survivor of her immediate family. She was found beneath a cedar door that shielded her from the falling debris, though she sustained arm injuries and a fractured pelvis. Her two sisters, Sofía and Isabella, were recovered from the rubble, along with their parents, Jairo Saavedra and Victoria Caicedo, and their uncle, Diego Caicedo.

Following the disaster, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support Ana María’s physical and emotional recovery. The triplets had recently graduated from university and were working together prior to the event.
