Fatalities and rescue efforts following Colombia earthquake

Overview

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction. Preliminary official reports from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) indicate at least 294 deaths and nearly 4,000 injuries, with cities such as Cali and Pereira among the hardest hit. The disaster has destroyed more than 14,000 homes, forcing many survivors into temporary shelters.

Individual tragedies have been reported throughout the affected regions. In Cali’s Alto Meléndez neighborhood, Yenci Lorena Restrepo died while attempting to lead her two children to safety; her husband, Sebastián Íguira, reported that she shielded the children from falling debris. In Pereira, Daniela Largo, a 32-year-old woman who gained national attention after being rescued alive from the rubble following approximately 37 hours, has died in the hospital. Her death followed medical complications, including an infection and cardiac arrest. She leaves behind a 12-year-old son.

Further devastation in Cali includes the collapse of a four-story apartment building that killed five members of the Saavedra Caycedo family. Ana María Saavedra Caycedo, one of a set of triplets, was the sole survivor of her immediate family.

Rescue operations remain ongoing as authorities search for at least 320 missing persons. Emergency responders are utilizing heavy machinery to clear debris from collapsed structures.
