Colombia militarizes Cúcuta following political assassination and bombings

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella has ordered the immediate and temporary militarization of Cúcuta, a key border city with Venezuela, to restore public order. The decision follows a wave of violence, including the assassination of Miguel Castellanos Serrano, a former government secretary and mayoral candidate, and an explosive device attack near the Francisco de Paula Santander bridge that injured several people, including police officers.

To combat criminal organizations and terrorism, the government is deploying over 500 special operations soldiers to the region. Additionally, the administration announced the upcoming Esparta and BOSUR operations, scheduled to begin on November 3, aimed at dismantling criminal finances and territorial control by groups such as the ELN and Tren de Aragua.

In Bogotá, the President has also proposed military control in the Sumapaz and Usme corridors to curb criminal expansion. Furthermore, De La Espriella ordered the immediate deportation of irregular Venezuelan migrants who are involved in criminal activities or have judicial records. This follows reports that over 148,000 Venezuelan citizens are in an irregular migratory status in the capital.
