Colombia faces extreme heat and widespread forest fires
Colombia is facing a severe environmental crisis characterized by extreme heatwaves and widespread forest fires. In the Caribbean region, Barranquilla and Soledad experienced intense heat, with a weather station in the Simón Bolívar sector recording a heat index of 55 °C. Experts from Ideam and iClima attributed these conditions to low humidity, decreased wind speeds, and the urban heat island effect. iClima recommended suspending outdoor activities to mitigate health risks.
Simultaneously, forest fires are ravaging multiple departments. Tolima is at the center of the emergency, with 33 municipalities under red alert and over 48,000 hectares affected since August 1. Cortolima has initiated 343 sanctioning processes against those responsible for fires. In Cundinamarca, 128 fires were recorded between September 1 and 17, affecting over 519 hectares. Other regions, including Nariño and Valle del Cauca, are also battling active fires that have threatened residential areas and agricultural land.
