Colombia House of Representatives debates equalizing retirement age
The Colombian House of Representatives has opened a debate regarding a proposal to equalize the retirement age for men and women. Currently, women can access pensions at age 57, while men must wait until age 62.
The proposal, introduced by the President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Iván Mauricio Lenis, suggests analyzing whether both genders should meet the same age requirement. During the discussions, representatives expressed concerns regarding the impact on women. Representative Milene Jarava Díaz noted that any changes must consider the specific labor conditions and caregiving responsibilities women face, including wage gaps and limited job opportunities.
Representative Hilda Gutiérrez also emphasized the importance of reviewing the implications of such a decision, noting that current pension conditions for women represent the results of long-standing social struggles for better wages and employment.
