Jaime Andrés Beltrán faces censure over Santa Marta trip during earthquake crisis

Colombian Housing Minister Jaime Andrés Beltrán is facing intense political scrutiny and a potential motion of censure following reports that he traveled to Santa Marta during a national emergency. The controversy arose after social media images and videos appeared to show the minister at a beach and pool during a holiday weekend, while the country continues to respond to a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck on August 10.

The earthquake has caused significant destruction across Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Caldas, and Quindío, resulting in approximately 300 deaths, 200 missing persons, and over 127,000 damaged or destroyed homes.

Congressman Alejandro Toro announced plans to present a motion of censure to demand explanations regarding the minister's whereabouts and his management of the crisis. The House of Representatives has summoned Beltrán to a plenary session on August 18 to address the government's response to the disaster.

Beltrán has denied the allegations of negligence, stating in a video that he was not on vacation but was visiting his wife and children in Bucaramanga during a break in their schedules. He maintained that he has not abandoned his responsibilities and has been working to coordinate reconstruction efforts.
