Overview

Following a major 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck southwest Colombia on August 10, the government has focused on humanitarian relief and managing political fallout. The administration faces intense scrutiny regarding Housing Minister Jaime Andrés Beltrán. Following reports of him being at a beach in Santa Marta during the national emergency, Beltrán issued an apology to the Senate on September 2. On September 9, the political crisis escalated as opposition lawmakers from Pacto Histórico and Alianza Verde moved forward with a motion of censure, accusing him of abandoning his responsibilities.

During Senate debates, Beltrán defended his actions, stating he remained in contact with his team and that the timing of his trip was “inopportunist,” though he rejected accusations targeting his family. He also noted that his ministry has requested an $11 trillion budget increase from the Ministry of Finance to address reconstruction needs. While Senator María Eugenia Londoño Ocampo criticized his performance as unfit for the role, Senator Gustavo Moreno argued the motion should focus on official management rather than personal circumstances. Senate President Honorio Henríquez has scheduled the official vote on the motion of censure for Tuesday, September 15.
