Colombia earthquake humanitarian and political response

Overview

Following a major earthquake that struck southwest Colombia on August 10, the government has focused on humanitarian relief and managing the political fallout of the disaster. The earthquake, measuring 7.4 magnitude, caused widespread destruction across regions including Valle del Cauca, Chocó, Risaralda, Caldas, and Quindío, impacting thousands of homes, health centers, and schools.

As of August 17, official data indicates approximately 300 deaths and 200 people missing. The disaster has destroyed over 26,000 homes and damaged more than 127,000 others. Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara has warned against the political exploitation of emergency aid in Buenaventura, stating that those attempting to use the crisis for political gain “will go to hell” and calling such actions “unforgivable.” To support recovery, Lara has requested construction materials from national cement companies and the installation of a field hospital.

Simultaneously, the administration faces intense political scrutiny. Housing Minister Jaime Andrés Beltrán is facing a motion of censure after reports and social media footage surfaced showing him vacationing at a beach and pool in Santa Marta during the national emergency. Congressman Alejandro Toro announced the motion to demand explanations regarding the minister’s official agenda. Furthermore, the House of Representatives has summoned Beltrán to a plenary session on August 18 to account for the government’s response.

In response to the allegations, Beltrán has denied claims of negligence. In a video, he stated he was not on vacation but was visiting his wife and children in Bucaramanga during a break in their schedules, maintaining that he has not abandoned his responsibilities and continues to coordinate reconstruction efforts.
