Colombia increases extraditions under President De la Espriella

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has authorized the extradition of 94 individuals to the United States during his administration. The most recent case involves Geovany Andrés Rojas, alias ‘Araña’, a former spokesperson for peace dialogues involving the Coordinadora Nacional Ejército Bolivariano. Rojas was arrested in February while participating in talks regarding illicit crop substitution in the Nariño and Putumayo regions.

De la Espriella’s administration is shifting away from the ‘total peace’ policy of former President Gustavo Petro, which utilized negotiations with various armed groups such as the FARC dissidents and the ELN. Instead, the current government is pursuing a strategy of ‘total war,’ focusing on military offensives and the eradication of illicit crops to combat drug trafficking and armed criminal structures. While the administration presents these actions as a demonstration of state strength, security experts have expressed concerns that a reliance on military force and fumigation may repeat the failures of previous security policies.
