Bogotá and Mexico implement new traffic safety and highway security measures

In Bogotá, Colombia, authorities are implementing several traffic and mobility measures. The District Mobility Secretariat is installing up to 41 new photodetector cameras, known as ‘lifesaver cameras,’ across strategic corridors including Avenida Las Américas, NQS, and Avenida El Dorado to monitor speeding and other infractions. Additionally, a new preferential lane on Calle 63 has been activated for public transport, with a transition from pedagogical to punitive fines starting in late September. Regarding licensing, a new theoretical exam will be required for first-time applicants and those seeking recategorization starting September 14, 2026. Local authorities have also implemented physical interventions on the Autopista Norte and Avenida Calle 26 to prevent dangerous driving maneuvers.

In Mexico, the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport (SICT) is intensifying highway security. Between January and July, 806 irregular access points were closed on federal toll roads across 20 states to curb robberies. The government is also investing 360 million pesos to install 20 ‘Intelligent Highway Arches’ connected to C4 surveillance systems. These devices will perform vehicle classification, license plate reading, and speed detection. Furthermore, over 1,000 operations have been conducted to inspect vehicle weights and dimensions, resulting in thousands of sanctions.
