Colombia intensifies crackdown on criminal groups and security firms

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has launched a series of aggressive security operations and regulatory crackdowns targeting criminal organizations. Through ‘Operation Perla,’ a joint effort by the National Police and the Attorney General’s Office, authorities arrested 148 individuals across 12 departments for kidnapping and extortion. The operation targeted groups including the Clan del Golfo, the ELN, and the Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra Nevada. The government reported a significant reduction in kidnapping and extortion rates compared to the previous year.

Simultaneously, the administration is targeting private security firms suspected of acting as fronts for criminal groups like Los Costeños and Clan Vega Daza. The President ordered the Superintendency of Private Security to investigate companies involved in illegal arms procurement and the disappearance of hundreds of firearms. Several firms, including Maximus, Blink, and Lost Prevention, face license cancellations or suspensions.

De la Espriella has also issued direct ultimatums to Clan del Golfo leaders, warning them that they have an ‘expiration date.’ While the administration highlights these results as victories for the state, the President’s strategy of publicly displaying the bodies of neutralized criminals has drawn significant controversy and criticism regarding human rights and respect for the deceased.
