Colombia leads Latin America in student AI usage

Colombian students lead Latin America in the weekly use of artificial intelligence for learning, with 56% of students utilizing the technology according to the OECD PISA 2025 study. This figure exceeds the OECD average of 46% and surpasses regional peers such as Peru, Uruguay, and Argentina.

However, the high adoption of AI contrasts with significant educational challenges. The OECD report notes that 60% of Colombian students attend schools facing infrastructure or material shortages. Additionally, while AI can support learning, the OECD warns it may serve as a shortcut that bypasses necessary cognitive work if used improperly.

In tandem with technological trends, UNESCO reports that over 3,000 Colombian schools are integrating strategies for critical thinking, digital literacy, and ethical AI into virtual learning environments. A national diagnostic involving 700 university students revealed difficulties in verifying the reliability of online courses. Experts suggest that while micro-learning is effective for practical tasks, complex subjects requiring sustained analysis still necessitate structured pedagogical frameworks and professional guidance.
