Colombia military faces rising drone-based attacks

Military forces in Colombia are facing increased threats from the use of drones to deliver explosive devices. In the municipality of Cajibío, Cauca, a soldier opened fire on an unidentified drone performing unauthorized flights over troop positions. This defensive action follows rising concerns regarding the use of aerial technology by FARC dissident groups to transport destructive payloads and conduct ambushes.

In a separate incident in the Herrera corregimiento of Rioblanco, Tolima, an attack targeting the 17th Infantry Battalion reportedly involved improvised explosive devices launched from drones. The attack resulted in minor injuries to one soldier. Tolima Governor Adriana Magali Matiz attributed the harassment to FARC dissidents and stated that such actions aim to instill fear in the southern region of the department. Authorities in both regions have increased surveillance and are working to strengthen electronic interference systems to neutralize aerial threats.
