Colombia: Motion of censure filed against Housing Minister
Alejandro Toro, a representative for the Pacto Histórico in Antioquia, has filed a motion of censure against Housing Minister Jaime Andrés Beltrán. The motion, signed by approximately 20 congressmen, alleges that the Minister failed to fulfill his constitutional duties and showed a lack of commitment during the national emergency following the August 10, 2026, earthquake that affected 15 departments.
The censure follows reports that Minister Beltrán was vacationing in Santa Marta between August 15 and 17, during the height of the seismic emergency. A previously scheduled session for August 26 was postponed after a tremor in Bogota forced the evacuation of the legislative headquarters; the session is now expected to proceed on September 1.
In addition to the motion of censure, the Colombian Congress is scheduled to discuss the General National Budget this week.
