Colombia peso appreciates to levels not seen since 2018
The Colombian peso has experienced significant appreciation, reaching exchange rates not seen since 2018. At the end of August, the representative market exchange rate (TRM) closed at 3,170 pesos per dollar, marking a nearly 20% year-on-year decrease.
Several factors contribute to this trend. Globally, the US dollar has weakened against most major currencies. Locally, the influx of remittances from the Colombian diaspora and illicit financial flows related to narcotics trafficking are noted as contributing factors that influence currency valuation and economic distortion.
While a stronger peso benefits importers and travelers, it poses challenges for exporters, as the value of their dollar-denominated sales decreases when converted into pesos, potentially narrowing profit margins to critical levels.
