Colombian peso appreciation 2026

Overview

In late July 2026, the Colombian peso surged, with the U.S. dollar price falling from about 4,000 to just over 3,200 pesos – a 17–8% move that pushed the exchange rate to its lowest level since 2019. Analysts noted that the rapid appreciation cut exporters’ earnings while benefiting importers, travelers and borrowers with dollar-denominated debt.

By early August, the peso’s rally had earned it the distinction of being the best-performing currency worldwide for the year. The continued strength was attributed to Colombia’s high policy rate of 12%, which created a sizable interest-rate differential attracting carry-trade investors, alongside rising oil prices and additional inflows from the shadow economy.

A report analyzing 36 major global currencies through June 2026 confirmed the Colombian peso as the top performer with a 19.2% increase against the U.S. dollar. This performance placed it ahead of other notable gainers, including the Israeli shekel, the Hungarian forint, the South African rand, and the Mexican peso. The data highlighted significant regional divergence, as the Colombian peso’s gains stood in stark contrast to the Argentine peso, which saw a decline of 18.9% against the U.S. dollar during the same period.
