Abelardo De la Espriella implements hardline security policies in Colombia
Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella is implementing a firm security agenda focused on restoring state authority and combating organized crime. During a Veterans Day ceremony in Cartagena, the President reaffirmed his commitment to defeating narcoterrorism and criminal groups, emphasizing his role as supreme commander of the Armed Forces.
As part of this hardline approach, the administration has introduced a draft antiterrorist statute. The proposal seeks to create new crimes and harsher penalties to target the financing of terrorist organizations, specifically focusing on illegal mining. However, experts have raised concerns that the statute could inadvertently criminalize small-scale traditional miners attempting to formalize their operations.
De la Espriella’s first two months in office have been characterized by a confrontational style toward both criminal elements and political or social critics. His administration has also reported a 63% reduction in extortion in certain areas through coordinated efforts with local leadership.
