Colombia: President faces criticism over footage of deceased militants

Colombia is facing heightened security tensions following an ELN drone attack on a military unit in Ocaña, Norte de Santander, which resulted in the deaths of three soldiers and injured five others. In response, President Abelardo de la Espriella announced a new military and police strategy for the Catatumbo region to dismantle criminal structures and illicit economies.

Simultaneously, the administration has faced intense domestic and international criticism following the release of videos by President de la Espriella. The footage shows the president walking among the bodies of 23 alleged FARC dissidents killed during Operation Azarias in Guaviare. Critics, including Senator Iván Cepeda and the International Crisis Group, have condemned the display, labeling it as a violation of humanitarian principles and describing the bodies as being exhibited like “war trophies.”

While supporters view the imagery as a necessary demonstration of state authority and strategic deterrence, opponents argue it promotes a logic of retaliation and dehumanizes combatants. The government maintains that its hardline approach is essential to combatting narcoterrorism and restoring territorial control.
