Colombia President De la Espriella faces criticism over UN statements
President Abelardo de la Espriella’s administration is facing significant backlash following statements made at the United Nations Security Council. Colombian Ambassador Mauricio Gaona stated that the 2016 Peace Agreement is “not a model for the world” during a session where the mandate for the Peace Agreement Verification Mission was renewed until October 2027.
The administration also requested the exclusion of oversight regarding the implementation of the Integral Rural Reform from the organization’s duties. Opposition figures, including former Interior Minister Alfonso Prada, criticized these moves, alleging they aim to undermine rural reform and the interests of farmers. Additionally, Rodrigo Londoño, president of the Comunes Movement, argued that dismissing the benefits of the Peace Agreement ignores the fact that it has prevented over 30,000 new victims.
Separately, the President has faced domestic criticism regarding his conduct toward regional officials. Reports indicate instances where he has publicly reprimanded governors, mayors, and university rectors, leading to calls for him to utilize judicial and control organs rather than public confrontations to address allegations of corruption.
