Colombia president-elect de la Espriella to reopen Jerusalem embassy, end ICJ case

Abelardo de la Espriella, Colombia’s president‑elect, will assume office on 7 August and has announced a shift in foreign policy toward Israel. His administration plans to open a Colombian embassy in Jerusalem and restore full diplomatic relations, including the removal of travel visas for Israelis.

De la Espriella also intends to withdraw Colombia’s support for South Africa’s genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice, reversing the stance taken by outgoing President Gustavo Petro. The incoming foreign minister, Omar Bula Escobar, met with Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar to set a roadmap for renewed ties.

Petro has condemned the move, labeling de la Espriella an “accomplice to genocide,” while the new government emphasizes security cooperation with the United States and Israel.
