Colombia court orders suspension of military bombings in areas with recruited minors
A Bogotá court has issued a provisional injunction ordering the Colombian government and military to suspend offensive aerial operations in areas where there is verified information regarding the presence of recruited or used minors. The ruling by Judge Viviana Arciniegas follows the deaths of three adolescents, aged 15 and 16, during a military operation against FARC dissidents in Guaviare.
President Abelardo de la Espriella has maintained a hardline security stance, stating that peace is built through the strength of weapons and the law. He has formally ended peace negotiations initiated by the previous administration and has criticized former President Gustavo Petro for being 'complacent with terrorism.' The administration has reported significant military activity, including the detention of over 12,000 people and the seizure of 38.6 tons of narcotics.
In response to the court order, the Ministry of the Interior has labeled the decision 'absurd and unconstitutional,' arguing that the standard for suspending bombings is too broad and makes military operations materially impossible. Meanwhile, authorities have also reported a 146% increase in drone attacks by illegal armed groups and successfully conducted 'Operation Tormenta,' which disabled 249 drug laboratories across 11 departments.
