Colombia President‑Elect Abelardo De La Espriella pushes Japan trade pact and urban security bloc
President‑elect Abelardo De La Espriella met in Bogotá with Japanese ambassador Shimizu Toru to design a bilateral economic strategy. The talks focused on accelerating the Economic Association Agreement, expanding technology transfer, attracting direct investment and promoting Colombian participation in the Green Expo 2027 in Yokohama. The administration intends to formalise the agreement shortly after De La Espriella takes office on 7 August.
On the same day, De La Espriella announced a decree that will create a "Block of Defense for Urban Security" effective 7 August. The measure will coordinate national and local authorities to combat crimes such as extortion, robberies and homicides, with priority cities including Cali. The initiative aims to improve institutional response and restore public safety in Colombian urban areas.
