Colombia's President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella appoints Nicolás Gómez as chief of staff
President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella of Colombia confirmed the appointment of Nicolás Gómez as chief of staff (jefe de despacho) of the new administration. Gómez, a political scientist and social communicator with a master’s in public policy, is also the great‑grandson of former president Laureano Gómez and nephew of the late Álvaro Gómez Hurtado. His role will be to coordinate the presidential agenda, manage day‑to‑day operations of the executive and serve as the main link between the Presidency and the ministries.
The appointment was announced on 7 July 2026, ahead of the inauguration on 7 August 2026. It follows the early formation of the cabinet’s core, with four ministries already named – Interior (Rodrigo Lara Restrepo), Finance (Miguel Gómez Martínez), Environment (Fabio Arjona Hincapié) and Defense (General Jorge Eduardo Mora López). Several other ministries remain unfilled as the transition team continues its work.
