Colombia President‑elect Abelardo De La Espriella unveils sweeping government reforms

President‑elect Abelardo De La Espriella presented a restructuring plan for the Colombian presidency that targets a yearly saving of roughly 10 000 billion pesos. The proposal calls for eliminating about 229 positions, dissolving the offices for National Reconciliation, Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, and moving their duties to the ministries of Interior, Defense and Foreign Affairs. A new Regional Management unit will replace the former Regional Council, and the Unit for Implementing the Final Agreement will shift to the National Security Commissioner. The Peace Commissioner role will be abolished, and a National Talent Platform will be introduced to recruit public officials based on merit and experience.

Analysts also examined how De La Espriella’s agenda could shape the National Culture Plan. Possible trajectories include a stronger focus on patriotic heritage, greater decentralisation of cultural funding, budget adjustments that could tighten or re‑prioritise programmes, incentives for creative industries, and potential debates over funding for diverse or gender‑focused projects. The direction will depend on the new Ministry of Culture’s policies and congressional budget decisions.
