Guatemala and Colombia face major corruption and security investigations

In Guatemala, the Public Ministry has issued a general alert following threats against prosecutors investigating high-risk cases involving drug trafficking, extortion, and illegal arms trade. Attorney General Gabriel García Luna confirmed that investigations into these threats are underway and emphasized that the institution will not be intimidated by organized crime.

In Colombia, several high-profile legal actions are unfolding. The Attorney General's Office has filed charges against former Defense Vice Minister Luis Edmundo Suárez Soto and five others regarding a $32 million contract for the maintenance of MI-17 helicopters. Prosecutors allege the contract was awarded through direct hiring to a U.S. firm that lacked the necessary technical and financial capacity.

Additionally, the Attorney General's Office in Colombia is investigating former Minister of Mines and Energy Edwin Palma Vega and other officials for their roles in the financial crisis of the energy distributor Air-e. The investigation focuses on alleged mismanagement of public resources, irregular billing practices, and failures to address the company's massive debt during their administration.
