Colombia recognizes Israeli sovereignty over Golan Heights

Colombia has officially recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, marking a significant shift in the nation's foreign policy. The decision, announced by the Foreign Ministry on August 10, follows the inauguration of President Abelardo de la Espriella on August 7. This move contradicts the stance of the previous administration under Gustavo Petro, who maintained that the territory is occupied Syrian land in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

The Colombian government stated the decision was made to implement a commitment agreed upon with Israel. This realignment has triggered a wave of international condemnation. Nations including Turkey, France, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia have rejected the recognition, asserting that the Golan Heights remains occupied Syrian territory under international law. While the declaration does not change the legal status of the region under international law, it represents a major departure from Colombia's previous voting record at the United Nations.
