Colombia records 12% fall in foreign investment while approving $50 bn senior housing project

Foreign direct investment (FDI) to Colombia contracted 12% year‑on‑year in the January–June 2026 period, dropping from US$4.916 billion to US$4.313 billion. June inflows totaled US$634 million, a 20% decline from the same month in 2025. The oil and mining sector was an exception, attracting US$476 million in June, also 20% lower than a year earlier. For the first half of the year the sector accumulated US$3.438 billion, down 12% from the previous year.

Outward Colombian investment showed mixed movements in 2026, with capital outflows in January, March and April and inflows in February and May; June saw a net return of US$615 million abroad. Remittances in June amounted to US$1.222 billion, down 4% year‑on‑year and 11% from May, while net transfers for the first five months rose 4% to US$7.85 billion.

Separately, real‑estate developer Casa Nua announced a investment of 50 000 million Colombian pesos to build a senior‑living complex in Chía, Cundinamarca, on the outskirts of Bogotá. The project will contain 98 residential units and provide health, recreational and social services, including an on‑site health center licensed by the Ministry of Health. Targeting Colombia’s growing over‑60 population—about eight million people, roughly 15% of the nation—the development aims to tap the expanding “silver economy” and generate new jobs in the region.
