Colombia economy 2025‑2026: growth, inflation, retail

Entities: Banco de la República · Leonardo Villar · Camacol Antioquia · Antioquia · Claudia Sheinbaum

Overview

In June 2026 the corporate sector accounted for virtually all national output, with the top 100 firms posting a 13 % profit rise. The central bank lifted the benchmark rate to 12 % on 30 June, a move President Gustavo Petro warned could hurt jobs and debt servicing. Inflation accelerated to 6.14 % in June, driven by food and housing‑utility costs, while the May CPI hovered near 5.8 %. GDP remains geographically concentrated: six departments, led by Bogotá (25 % of output), generated two‑thirds of production in 2025. Huila’s growth outpaced the national pace (2.7 % vs 2.6 %) on the back of agriculture, commerce and a modest construction rebound. Manufacturing showed continued pressure, with a 0.4 % drop in industrial production and a 0.8 % fall in sales in May, and employment down 1 %. The banking sector recorded a 71 % profit surge in 2025, though a new wealth tax trimmed earnings for some banks. Foreign direct investment slipped 12 % in the first half of 2026, while oil and mining remained the main recipients. A 50‑billion‑peso senior‑housing project was announced to serve the “silver economy”. Retail sales rebounded strongly in May, up 11.7 % YoY, led by vehicles and electronics, even as overall GDP growth is expected to moderate to about 2.4 % for 2026. Bogotá’s economy outpaced the nation, posting 3.5 % growth in 2025. May 2026 saw GDP expand 4.1 % YoY, surpassing forecasts, driven by a 5.4 % rise in services and a 10.5 % jump in public administration, health, education and entertainment. Primary activities grew only 0.7 % and secondary activities 0.5 %. On 3 August the central bank kept the policy rate at 12 % and launched a $400 million reserve purchase, prompting the peso to appreciate by about 81 pesos.
