Colombia experiences multiple tremors following major earthquake

Colombia continues to experience significant seismic activity one month after a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific region on August 10. On Saturday, September 12, multiple tremors were recorded across various departments, including a 4.6 magnitude earthquake in Istmina, Chocó, which was felt in cities such as Cali, Pereira, and Armenia.

Other notable tremors on the same day included a 3.3 magnitude event in Murindó, Antioquia, and a 2.8 magnitude quake in Saravena, Arauca. While no major damage was reported from these recent aftershocks, some buildings in Cali were evacuated as a precaution.

The ongoing instability has prompted discussions regarding economic recovery. AmCham Colombia has supported a proposal for a temporary VAT cut on airline tickets to stimulate tourism in the affected zones. Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis persists in regions like Buenaventura and Quibdó, where residents continue to face housing insecurity and structural vulnerabilities in the wake of the initial disaster.
