Seismic activity in Colombia

Overview

Following a devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10 in Chocó, which caused at least 331 deaths and thousands of injuries, Colombia has experienced continued seismic activity. The initial event, centered in San José del Palmar, created significant uncertainty for travelers and led to widespread cancellations and route modifications in cities such as Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali. The economic damage from the August 10 event is estimated at US$9.57 billion.

On August 26, a magnitude 5.1 tremor struck the Los Santos municipality in the Santander department at a depth of approximately 149 kilometers. Occurring at 11:45 a.m. local time, the earthquake originated within the Bucaramanga Seismic Nest, an area noted for high daily seismic activity. The tremor was felt across several regions, including Santander, Norte de Santander, Arauca, Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Antioquia, and Valle del Cauca, as well as in the Venezuelan state of Táchira. In major cities such as Bogotá and Medellín, the movement prompted preventive evacuations of buildings and offices. No deaths or significant structural damages have been confirmed from this specific event.

Further seismic activity was recorded on August 27, when a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Istmina, Chocó.

In response to the ongoing crisis, humanitarian efforts and solidarity initiatives have expanded. Musician Juan Luis Guerra has joined singer Juanes in the ‘Marea Viva’ initiative to raise funds for sustainable housing reconstruction in the Chocó department. Additionally, singer Santiago Cruz has pledged a portion of his tour proceeds to support food banks for earthquake victims and drought-affected communities in Tolima.
