Colombia Secures Long-Term Protection for Santurbán Páramo

Colombia's Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development confirmed the permanent designation of definitive reserve areas in the lower Santurbán páramo and extended the temporary reserve status until 2029. The decision safeguards the critical water sources that supply millions of residents in the departments of Santander and Norte de Santander and curtails the possibility of large‑scale mining projects in the region. Environmental groups hailed the move as a historic achievement after 17 years of community mobilization, legal action, and advocacy. Mayerly López of the Committee for the Defense of Water and the Páramo noted that the measure represents a major advance for the protection of the ecosystem, which is vital for water regulation and biodiversity.
