Colombia páramo protection initiatives

In early August 2026, Colombia’s Ministry of Environment formalized protection for the Cruz Verde‑Sumapaz páramo complex, designating roughly 315,000 ha across Cundinamarca, Meta, Huila and Bogotá as a protected zone. The resolution bans mining and hydrocarbon exploration, mandates zoning and an environmental‑management plan within four years, and emphasizes community participation following a 2017 Constitutional Court ruling.

Two days later, the ministry announced permanent reserve status for the lower Santurbán páramo and extended its temporary reserve until 2029. The measure safeguards critical water sources for millions in Santander and Norte de Santander and blocks large‑scale mining projects, concluding 17 years of community mobilization, legal action and advocacy. Both actions illustrate a coordinated effort to preserve Colombia’s high‑altitude ecosystems and water resources through legal designations and participatory management.
