Colombia security situation shows rising armed group presence and new military offensives

Reports on the security situation in Colombia highlight a significant expansion of illegal armed groups. According to the Pares Foundation, the number of municipalities with a presence of illegal armed groups rose from 212 in 2018 to 428 in 2022, and reached 518 by early 2025. The foundation notes severe humanitarian impacts, including the assassination of 196 social leaders in 2025, 681 instances of forced displacement, and the confinement of over 69,000 people.

In contrast, recent data from the administration of Abelardo de la Espriella indicates a shift toward active military and judicial confrontation. During the first 24 days of his government (August 7 to August 30), the Colombian Military Forces executed 782 actions against criminal networks, resulting in 702 arrests and 35 surrenders to justice. Targeted groups include the ELN, Clan del Golfo, and various FARC dissident factions. Additionally, the Attorney General's Office has reactivated arrest warrants for several criminal leaders that were previously suspended under the previous administration's “Total Peace” policy.
