Colombia Senate President Lidio García Turbay urges respect for election results and warns Congress won’t be a by‑stand

Senate President Lidio García Turbay called on Colombians to respect the authorities that administered the recent presidential election, in which Abelardo de la Espriella was elected with nearly 13 million votes. He condemned outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s refusal to recognise the outcome, saying that ignoring the results undermines the rule of law and threatens institutional stability.

García Turbay also addressed the incoming government, stressing that the Congress must not be treated as a mere spectator. He warned that the new administration must engage in dialogue with the legislature, which will play an active role in shaping policies amid a fragmented parliament.

The statements highlight growing political tension in Colombia as the country confronts the aftermath of a contested vote and a strained relationship between the executive and legislative branches.
