Colombia shows high national optimism despite economic and innovation challenges
Recent reports highlight contrasting perspectives on Colombia's national trajectory and economic standing. According to an Ipsos study, 52% of Colombians believe the country is on the right track, a figure that has risen significantly compared to previous years. This sentiment places Colombia fifth globally in terms of perceived direction, notably higher than many European nations. However, this optimism does not extend to current economic satisfaction, as 62% of citizens rate the economy poorly. Primary concerns for the population include unemployment (36%), crime and violence (33%), and poverty and inequality (32%).
In terms of technological and industrial development, the 2026 Global Innovation Index by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ranks Colombia 78th out of 139 economies. While the country shows strengths in business sophistication, it faces significant lags in institutional frameworks and scientific production. Colombia currently ranks seventh in Latin America and the Caribbean, struggling to effectively connect research and talent with regional markets.
