Colombia intensifies airspace security amid surge in explosive drone attacks

Colombia is facing a significant escalation in asymmetric warfare as criminal organizations increasingly use explosive-laden drones. Intelligence reports indicate that between January 2024 and October 2026, there were 443 such attacks, resulting in 25 deaths and 356 injuries. The department of Cauca has been the most heavily impacted region. According to ACLED, Colombia leads Latin America in this threat, with over 53% of the region's affected municipalities located within the country.

In response, the Colombian Ministry of Defense has announced the development of advanced technologies to secure its airspace. This effort is being bolstered by international cooperation. Ecuador and Colombia recently conducted the Zeus Cóndor 2026 joint aerial exercise to standardize interdiction tactics and improve the detection of illicit aircraft along their 732-kilometer shared border.

Furthermore, the United States has intensified its regional involvement by relocating MQ-9 Reaper attack drones from Africa to Colombia and Ecuador. This move is part of a broader strategy to combat drug trafficking cartels and expand military operations from maritime to land-based targets.
