Colombia urged to facilitate Venezuelan diaspora voting amid reconstruction plans

Colombia is being called upon to play an active role in enabling the political participation of the Venezuelan diaspora as part of Venezuela’s post‑earthquake recovery. Over 2.8 million Venezuelan migrants live in Colombia, many of whom are regularised and eligible to vote if mechanisms allow. Analysts argue that free, internationally‑monitored elections that include diaspora votes are essential for restoring democratic legitimacy in Venezuela and for guiding reconstruction efforts. The United States’ three‑phase plan – stabilization, recovery, and transition – is cited as backing the need for a credible electoral process, while Colombia’s temporary protection status for Venezuelan migrants could serve as a model for facilitating voting rights abroad.
