Colombia weather forecast: Heavy rains and landslide alerts issued
The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) has issued a weather forecast for Colombia indicating highly variable conditions across the country for the final week of September. Heavy rainfall and storms are expected primarily in the Andean and Pacific regions, specifically affecting Antioquia, Santander, Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Cauca, and Nariño.
These increased precipitation levels are linked to the movement of tropical wave No. 52. While the country is experiencing conditions associated with El Niño, experts note that this phenomenon does not eliminate rainfall but rather reduces historical averages. The current weather pattern is part of the transition toward the year's second rainy season.
Authorities have issued alerts for 371 municipalities due to the risk of sudden rises in river levels, flooding, and landslides in mountainous areas. In contrast, parts of the Orinoquía and Amazonia regions may experience drier conditions with elevated temperatures.
