Medellín implements new Pico y Placa rotation for second half of 2026

From Monday 3 August 2026 the metropolitan area of Medellín and ten neighboring municipalities in the Valle de Aburrá will enforce a new pico y placa schedule. Vehicles are prohibited from circulating between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekdays according to the following digit assignments: Monday 5 and 8, Tuesday 1 and 4, Wednesday 0 and 2, Thursday 3 and 6, Friday 7 and 9. The restriction applies to private cars, official vehicles, motorcycles of two‑ and four‑stroke engines, and taxis (which follow a bi‑weekly rotation). Electric, gas‑fuelled and hybrid vehicles registered in the RUNT are exempt, as are several main corridors such as Avenida Regional, Autopista Sur and Vía Las Palmas. A four‑day pedagogical period (3–6 August) will precede enforcement; fines of 15 daily minimum wages (about $600 000 COP) and possible vehicle immobilisation begin on 10 August for violations. The measure aims to ease peak‑hour congestion, cut emissions and improve overall mobility in the region.
