Colombian couple expects rare monozygotic quadruplets

A couple from Caucasia, Antioquia, is expecting the birth of monozygotic quadruplets, a rare medical occurrence where four embryos originate from a single fertilized egg. The expectant parents, María Tapia and Jonatan Zapa, discovered the pregnancy during a routine ultrasound at the Hospital César Uribe Piedrahíta.

Medical evaluations suggest the four male fetuses share the same genetic material, making them genetically identical. Due to the high-risk nature of a quadruple pregnancy, Tapia has been transferred to Medellín for specialized medical surveillance and monitoring. As of the latest reports, the pregnancy has reached approximately 30 weeks.
