Rare monozygotic quadruplet birth in Colombia

Overview

A couple from Caucasia, Antioquia, discovered a rare pregnancy involving monozygotic quadruplets—four embryos originating from a single fertilized egg—during a routine ultrasound. Due to the high-risk nature of the pregnancy, the mother, María Tapia, was transferred to Medellín for specialized monitoring.

On October 21, Tapia gave birth to four male infants, named Mariano, Maximiliano, Emiliano, and Tiago, at the Clínica del Prado in Medellín. The pregnancy was medically exceptional as the fetuses shared a single placenta. To mitigate risks, medical specialists concluded the pregnancy at 34 weeks. The mother and the newborns are reported to be in stable condition, with the infants receiving care in a neonatal unit.
