Colombian football clubs launch relief efforts after earthquake
Following a major earthquake in Colombia, professional football clubs in the Liga BetPlay have suspended competitions and pivoted to humanitarian relief efforts. Matches across various divisions, including the women's league, have been postponed, with play expected to resume on August 19.
Several clubs have converted their facilities into collection centers. Independiente Santa Fe has collected over 50 tons of aid and pledged a portion of ticket sales from their match against River Plate to victims. Millonarios has organized collection drives involving their entire squad, while Atlético Nacional plans to donate proceeds from their upcoming match against Santa Fe. Players from various teams have also personally contributed by sending aid to affected areas like Pereira.
The earthquake has also caused structural damage to club infrastructure. Deportivo Cali has been forced to close its Álex Gorayeb headquarters due to significant cracks and structural concerns. While staff are working remotely or from the Pance sports complex, the club awaits expert technical reports to determine if the building requires major repairs or long-term abandonment.
