Colombian football community earthquake relief efforts

Overview

The Colombian football community has expanded its humanitarian response following the August 10 earthquake. Professional clubs in the Liga BetPlay have converted facilities into collection centers; Independiente Santa Fe has gathered over 50 tons of aid and pledged ticket sales from its match against River Plate to victims, while Millonarios has organized squad-wide collection drives. Atlético Nacional also plans to donate proceeds from its upcoming match against Santa Fe. The disaster has impacted club infrastructure, notably forcing Deportivo Cali to close its Álex Gorayeb headquarters due to significant structural cracks. New charity initiatives have emerged to support reconstruction. Former player Mario Yepes has organized a ‘Levantemos a Colombia’ charity match featuring football legends, scheduled for August 21 at El Campín stadium in Bogotá. Additionally, rivals Atlético Nacional and América de Cali are set to play a friendly match at Chase Stadium in Miami to raise funds for earthquake reconstruction efforts. International relief efforts have been formalized through agreements between national federations. Ramón Jesurún, president of the Colombian Football Federation (FCF), confirmed that the Colombian and Chilean national teams will play two friendly matches in November 2026. The first will take place on November 13 at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium in Cali, with all ticket proceeds being donated to assist victims. This match marks the Colombian national team’s first appearance in Cali since 2008. The second match is set for November 17 at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile. As previously reported, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) confirmed 289 deaths, 4,187 injuries, and 143 people missing. Recent updates indicate the death toll has risen to over 330, with 154 deaths recorded in Cali. The earthquake caused an estimated $9.5 billion in damages, affecting approximately 400,000 people.
