Colombian peso tops global currency performance in 2026

The Colombian peso has appreciated by almost 20% against the U.S. dollar, reaching its strongest level since 2019 and becoming the best‑performing currency worldwide for 2026. The surge is driven by Colombia’s high policy rate of 12%, which creates a large interest‑rate differential that attracts international carry‑trade investors. Rising oil prices, a key export for Colombia, have added further buying pressure on the peso, while illicit dollar inflows from the shadow economy have also contributed to the currency’s strength.

Colombia is not the only country in the region facing a strong peso; Uruguay recently cut its rates sharply after a peso rally helped lower inflation. The combination of high domestic rates, favorable oil market conditions, and capital inflows has made the Colombian peso a focal point for global investors seeking higher returns.
