Colombian Senate appoints leadership of key commissions for 2026‑27

The Colombian Senate has confirmed the directors of its seven permanent constitutional commissions for the 2026‑2027 legislative period. Center‑right parties secured the most influential posts ahead of the incoming government of President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella.

Commission 1 (constitutional reforms) will be chaired by Senator Enrique Gómez (Salvación Nacional) with José Nicolás Gómez as vice‑president. The health, labor, pensions and housing commission (Commission 7) will be led by Senator Andrés Forero (Centro Democrático). Economic commissions are headed by traditional parties: Sara Castellanos (Salvación Nacional) presides over Commission 3 (taxes and finance); Liliana Benavides (Conservative Party) chairs Commission 4 (budget and fiscal control); Juan Espinal (Uribista) leads Commission 5 (agriculture, environment and energy). Other seats include Carlos Guevara (MIRA) for Commission 6 and other vice‑presidential appointments from Cambio Radical, Centro Democrático and Nuevo Liberalismo.

The new leadership is expected to shape the legislative agenda on constitutional matters, fiscal policy, and major social reforms during the first year of the legislature.
