Colombia's Ambassador-designate to the Netherlands criticizes ICC
Martín Eduardo Botero, the ambassador-designate to the Netherlands for the government of Abelardo de la Espriella, has expressed strong opposition to the International Criminal Court (ICC) through social media posts. Botero, who serves as the diplomatic link between Colombia and the ICC, the International Court of Justice, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, has accused the tribunal of being unable to act impartially.
In posts dating back to 2024, Botero claimed the ICC has focused on political interests rather than universal justice, specifically citing a failure to pursue crimes committed by Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela in a timely and fair manner. He further characterized unconditional support for the court as ignoring a history of biases, errors, and manipulations.
Botero also criticized former ICC prosecutor Karim Khan, describing his resignation as the “lowest point” of an already questioned institution. His appointment comes amid discussions regarding Colombia's potential withdrawal from the Rome Statute, which grants the ICC jurisdiction within the country. Additionally, the De la Espriella administration recently withdrew the candidacy of former ambassador Carolina Olarte for an ICC magistracy position.
