Colombia's competitiveness falls as Chile's GDP contracts in Q1 2026
Colombia slipped in the Global Competitiveness Index, dropping from 54th to 59th place among 70 economies. The decline spans all four pillars—economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure—signalling structural challenges that could deter investment and growth.
In Chile, the central bank reported a 0.5% drop in gross domestic product for the first quarter of 2026. The downturn, attributed partly to external factors such as copper prices and global financial conditions, prompted the finance minister to blame preceding administrations and call for renewed growth policies.
